Zvezda is the base of the Soviet Union on the Moon. It is located near the rim of the Shackleton Crater, about 13 km from the American base Jamestown.
History[]
Zvezda was founded in 1974, about 10 months after the US base, and became the second outpost established by humanity on the Moon.[1] The base underwent an expansion in late 1980.[2]
In 1983, Soviet cosmonauts captured the US claimed mining site 357 Bravo and used it to collect materials for their own.[3] The site was taken back by US Moon Marines a couple of months later.[4]
In fall 1983, during the Jamestown crisis, Soviet cosmonauts attacked the US base, almost causing a meltdown of Jamestown's nuclear reactor.[5][6]
