Wubbo Ockels, in season 2, episode 2, "The Bleeding Edge"

Wubbo Ockels was a Dutch physicist and an astronaut with ESA. He was at NASA's Jamestown base on the Moon as part of the Jamestown 84 mission in spring 1983.

History[]

Solar flare event[]

On May 21, 1983, a massive solar stormW was about to hit Earth and soon after also the Moon. Everybody was ordered to return to Jamestown immediately, however, Wubbo and Molly Cobb were too far away to make it there in time so they decided to find shelter in a lava tubeW close to their base camp. On his way, Wubbo crashed his lunar rover, leaving him unconscious and with serious injuries lying on the lunar surface. Molly was already safe inside the lava tube awaiting him, when she discovered his rover through her camera's lens laying upside down behind a rock. Although the solar storm had already hit the Moon, Molly decided to save him by traversing the lunar terrain and carrying him back to the tube.[1]

Aftermath[]

Wubbo and Molly both had to leave Jamestown the day after and return to Earth with Ellen Wilson. Due to this incident and his increased probability of cancer, Wubbo subsequently left NASA and returned to the Netherlands to spend the time he had left with his family.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

In the real world, Wubbo Ockels was part of the Spacelab D1 missionW in 1985 where he flew with the space shuttle ChallengerW. He spent 7 days in space. A small planetoid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter, 9496 OckelsW, is named after him. Ockels died in 2014.

Trivia[]

Bjørn Alexander, who is from Norway, was supposedly cast for the role after he had added a snippet of himself speaking Dutch in his audition video,[3] specifically a monologue from the 2004 Norwegian sketch show Team AntonsenW.[4] As the sketches in question were unsubbed during original broadcasts and on VoD until 2019, the vast majority of viewers (Bjørn included, as well as most Norwegian news sites at the time) thought it was fake Dutch-like sounds, but the casting crew recognized it as real Dutch.
