Svetlana Vladimirovna Zakharova is a cosmonaut and spacecraft pilot for Roscosmos, who worked at Happy Valley, Mars, in 2003.[2]

History[]

Svetlana and Ed Baldwin co-piloted Ranger 1 on the Kronos capturing mission. Although initially a success, the anchors were not stable enough and Ranger 1 began losing control. After Tom Parker was killed, and Grigory Kuznetsov's leg was crushed in a failed attempt to re-tension the cables, Ed intended to do an emergency EVA, but Svetlana advised him not to.[2]

Months later, Svetlana stopped receiving messages from her father and later learned of a coup d'état happening in the Soviet Union. Although Danielle Poole offered her some time off, Svetlana insisted to continue with her Ranger 1 training runs. During which, Ed offered her to take the lead as he tried to hide his hand tremors. Svetlana was able to succesfully complete the docking procedure. After the training, Svetlana complained about back pain she had since the asteroid capturing mission, and that Dr. Dimitri Mayakovsky's pain medications would not help. Ed then invited her to his garden, also showing her his secret marijuana plants he had been growing, and offered her to smoke to allay her pain.[3]

While testing modified anchor clamps, Vasily Galkin began discussing politics, despite Svetlana not being interested. However, after Galkin called her a traitor, Svetlana tries to attack him, they begin to push and shove until Galkin is knocked over, damaging his suit. Svetlana called for help immediately, as Galkin was taken to hyperbaric chambers.[4]

Later, Ed and Danielle discuss her punishment, but she tells the two it is irrevelevant as she has been ordered to return to Moscow to stand trial as Galkin is the nephew of a politburo member. Ed and Danielle both agree to keep her on the base, afraid of the one sided trial she would face. This ultimately creates tensions on the base, as the Soviet Union consider pulling out of the Mars-7 Alliance and possibly re-igniting the Cold War. However, Eli Hobson ultimately comes with the idea to have Svetlana stand trial in India, which is the only neutral M-7 nation, which both Al Gore and Fyodor Korzhenko agree to.[4]

Before Svetlana left, Ed tried to have her hide out on the fourth floor while he periodically would bring her supplies, but Svetlana didn't want Ed to risk his career for her. The two share a kiss before Ed escorted her out of the base.[4]
