Shorty Powers, real name John A. Powers, was the public affairs officer (PAO) for NASA in 1969 and the early 70s.
History[]
Shorty was with NASA administrator Thomas Paine when the latter told Deke Slayton about President Nixon's wish to send a woman to the Moon, preferably a blonde.[1]
Subsequently, he took part at the meetings to select the female astronaut candidates, wrote press briefings, and later on organised photo-shootings for the media.[2]

In the real timeline, John "Shorty" Powers was NASA's public affairs officer from 1959 - 1963 during the Project Mercury and was known as the "voice of the astronauts", the "voice of Mercury Control," and the "eighth astronaut".
