Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th president of the United States from 1969 to 1973.
History[]
On June 26, 1969, when the Soviet Union managed to land the first man on the Moon, not wanting to become the president who lost the Space Race, he ordered the CIA to look again at all intelligence reports to see if they had missed anything.[1]
After Wernher von Braun disapproved his wish for a military base on the Moon, he told Henry Kissinger that he wants "that Kraut bastard gone" and demanded to find a "creative way" to get rid of the popular NASA chief rocket designer. This was done by declassifying documents from Operation Paperclip, making von Braun's former connection with the Allgemeine SS public during a congressional hearing about the lost Space Race.[2]
After the Soviets landed the first woman, Anastasia Belikova, on the Moon on 20 September 1969, Nixon ordered NASA to also send a female astronaut to space, "preferably a blonde", which led to the first female ASCAN program at NASA.[3] On October 18, 1971, his wish was finally fulfilled when Molly Cobb landed on the lunar surface as part of Apollo 15, talking to the president on telephone, broadcasted live on national television.[4]
In the 1972 presidential election, Nixon was defeated by Democrat Ted Kennedy. His involvement in the Watergate scandal during his presidency led to criminal proceedings against him, though he rejected Kennedy's offer of a pardon in 1974.[5]
