History[]
Season 3[]
Nuclear fusion and founding of Helios[]
In the mid 80s, Dev Ayesa and Richard Hilliard developed the first working fusion reactorW based on helium-3W. This game-changing breakthrough marked a possible start into a clean nuclear energy future and the end of the fossil fuel era. However, the dream still remained out of reach because of the rarity of this isotope on Earth.[1] [2]
Together, they founded the aerospace company Helios.
Early 1987, NASA announced the discovery of enormous deposits of helium-3 on the Moon. In April 1987, Helios won a NASA contract to mine the isotope on the Moon and bring it back to Earth.[1] [2]
Mars mission[]
Hilliard was generally less enthusiastic about Helios' Mars engagement. There were disputes between him and Dev on a regular basis. In a board meeting in fall 1995, he announced that Helios' Mars adventures would be over and the company would go back to concentrate on their core business, the mining of helium-3. Later, the board of directors decided to remove Dev from his position as CEO of the company. Hilliard proposed that Karen Baldwin would take over this position.[3]
