Rich LaPorte was the commander of the Polaris Orbital Hotel, the first commercial space station in Earth's orbit.

History

Commander LaPorte was working on the Polaris flight deck, when debris from a failed North Korean rocket hit the station during the wedding of Danny and Amber Stevens, resulting in an uncommanded burn of one of the station's orbital thrusters. He informed Sam Cleveland and Karen Baldwin and ordered an EVA, performed by the technicians Joaquin Asencio and Cy Reed. However, during the spacewalk, a stabilizer cable connecting the habitation ring and the central hub ripped off, hit the two technicians, killed their life support system and sent them both into open space.

As the artificial gravity in the ring sections was constantly rising due to the faster spinning, LaPorte had to order the immediate evacuation of the station, because of the danger of the station breaking apart should the gravity level exceed 4 G.
