Ranger is a special type of spacecraft designed to capture asteroids and tow them into a planet's orbit for later mining. It was first introduced in the early 2000s.[1]

History[]

The spacecraft's first mission was the Kronos mission (Ranger-1) in March 2003. The objective was to capture the asteroid XF Kronos and push it towards Mars to be mined in Martian orbit. However, the mission failed terribly, killing 2 crew members.[1]

The next mission, the Goldilocks mission (Ranger-2), was introduced in October 2003 after the Thomas Paine Space Telescope discovered asteroid 2003LC, and analysis of the object resulted in it being an iridium-rich object that would cross Mars' orbit within the following 10 weeks. The value and location led to the asteroid being dubbed "Goldilocks".[2] The mission was originally planned to capture the asteroid toward Mars to be mined in Martian orbit. Due to the excessive costs involved, this was changed to redirecting it towards Earth by utilising a gravity assist from Mars, to be able to mine in Earth's orbit instead.[3]

Concept design[]

Ranger concept designs were done by Kit Stølen and Sean Hargeaves. The concept went through discussions, including if Ranger should push or pull, depending the size of the asteroid, and what the push or pull mechanisms could look like.[4] [5]
