Park Chol was a North Korean cosmonaut who was sent to Mars through a North Korean probe.

History

During the Race to Mars, North Korea sent a probe to Mars, which was believed to be unmanned. While Helios, NASA, and Roscosmos were racing to be first, the North Koreans quietly reached the red planet first on February 8, 1995.

At landing, Chol was killed upon impact. He was buried by his surviving crew member Lee Jung-Gil in the Martian desert.

Behind the Scenes

Jason Her was originally hired to be the Korean dialect coach for Joel Kinnaman and C.S. Lee, and was only given the role on the recommendation of Lee.
