Moon Marines were first sent to the Moon in August 1983.[1] In September, they were used to take back and hold mining site 357/Bravo, which was taken by the Soviets some month before. They were controversially issued M16 rifles as part of their standard equipment.[2]
Later, they shot two cosmonauts they discovered while patrolling near the mining site, killing one and seriously injuring the other.[3] The incident caused tension between the US and the Soviet Union to reach a new all-time high. The Marines were later involved when Jamestown was attacked by Soviet cosmonauts in a reaction to the shooting.[4]
In 1989, five Moon Marines, including highly decorated Jamestown attack veteran Steven Lopez, were killed when their Pathfinder shuttle unexpectedly depressurized during a training operation.[5]
Legacy[]
By 1995, the 1983 deployment of the Moon Marines is largely thought of as a fiasco, with NASA administrator Eli Hobson sarcastically suggesting a repeat of the operation in response to the security concerns on Happy Valley.[6]
