Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev is a Soviet politician who served as leader of the Soviet Union from 1986 to 2003.[1] [2] [3]
History[]
Ideologically, Gorbachev initially adhered to Marxism–Leninism although he had moved towards social democracy by the early 1990s, and successfully reformed the Soviet Union into a hybrid system with a market economy.
As a consequence of Gorbachev's reforms, the Soviets were able to expand their influence into Latin America, culminating in 1988 with Arnoldo Martínez Verdugo becoming the first Marxist to win the presidency of Mexico.[1] [note 2]
In 1997, Gorbachev signed the Mars-7 Alliance treaty to end the Space Race, and by 2003, formally ended the Cold War.[4] Later in 2003, he was deposed in a coup d'etat led by the communist hardliners and the Second Directorate of the KGB, who installed Fyodor Korzhenko as his replacement.[3] This follows days of his disappearance.[5]

Notes[]
- ↑ The title used for the position of the Soviet leader is inconsistent throughout the series. It is often called "Premier", but also "President" several times, and sometimes just "Leader".
In the real world, the post of the Soviet head of state was called "Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet" before being transferred to the new office of "President of the Soviet Union" after 1990 under Gorbachev. However, Gorbachev was the only holder of that title.
The title of "Premier" (or formally "Chairman of the Council of Ministers") did exist in reality, but it refers to the head of government, not the head of state. - ↑ There is a discrepancy between the article shown in the beginning of episode 3x01 and the Apple TV+ bonus video covering the years 1984-1992. While said article is dated with April 17, 1986, in the bonus video the story of Verdugo's victory is said to have happened in 1988. Since the rise of more communist countries was driven by the new Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who took office in 1986, just 2 weeks before that article's date, it is most likely that 1988 is the correct year of this event.
Behind the scenes[]
- In the original timeline, Gorbachev passed away due to a prolonged illness on August 30, 2022.
