Lenara Catiche is the former director of the Soviet space agency Roscosmos as of 1995.[1] Following Fyodor Korzhenko's coup d'état in 2003, Lenara was succeeded by Irina Morozova as director of Roscosmos.[2]
History[]
Season 3[]
In late 1994, at the beginning of the Race to Mars, Lenara Catiche accused the Americans of playing "dirty tricks" on Soviet television, after Sojourner 1 had hoisted its solar sails and gained an advantage in the race.[1]
These "dirty tricks" result in the Soviet spacecraft Mars-94 to push its engines beyond safeguards, leading to a nuclear meltdown halfway to Mars. The crew has to be rescued by Sojourner, causing further embarrassment for Lenara and Roscosmos. A delegation is then sent to Johnson Space Center in Houston to coordinate the now US/USSR joint mission. She meets with JSC-director Margo Madison, asking for further cooperation, utilizing the control the Soviet Union has on Margo due to her previous sharing of information.[3]
Due to the loss of Mars-94 and its assorted equipment, Roscosmos is unable to research a potential reservoir of liquid water they had discovered previously. She visits Helios and meets with Dev Ayesa and Karen Baldwin to establish a Soviet-Helios mission, due to their equipment being suitable for the task.[4]
In September 1995, she visits Margo and informs her that she is currently being investigated by the FBI following a report from a NASA employee. Margo asks who, and is seemingly unsurprised when she learns that it was Aleida Rosales. Lenara offers Margo a way out, although Margo is unsure at first. She pushes the issue by plainly stating that she will spend the next 40 years in prison if she refuses. Margo relents and is smuggled out of the country. Unbeknownst to either of them though, Charles Bernitz and his conspirators have been organizing an attack on the Johnson Space Center. The resulting bombing acts as an unforeseen cover for Margo's defection. With the world believing she is dead.[5]
Season 4[]
During the coup d'état that installed Fyodor Korzhenko as Soviet Premier in 2003, Catiche is replaced by Irina Morozova as director of Roscosmos. Her fate is unknown after this date.[6]
