Space Shuttle Kon-Tiki is an American spacecraft. The spaceplane is one of the ten first generation Space Shuttles in NASA's fleet.

History[]

Like all first generation shuttles, Kon-Tiki was put into service sometime between late 1981 and early 1983.

On May 20, 1983, Kon-Tiki was on its mission STS-83-G and was docked at Skylab, but scheduled for reentry and landing in the afternoon. However, for some reason they were still docked to the space station the next day, when ESA astronaut Doreen Campbell detected a massive coronal mass ejectionW in Skylab's solar observatory, the Apollo Telescope MountW, causing a dangerous solar storm that threatened satellites, spacecrafts and astronauts in Earth's orbit and on the Moon.[1]

Kon-Tiki is still in service in the 90s and used for Jamestown supply runs and other operations.

Known missions[]

Designator Mission Date
STS-83-G Skylab 1983 [2]
STS-92-P Jamestown crew rotation
Jamestown 197
1992 [3]

Behind the scenes[]

The shuttle is named after the vessel Kon-TikiW, which writer Thor HeyerdahlW used to test a theory about human migration to Polynesia. The name Kon-Tiki comes from the Inca creator deityW ViracochaW.

In the real word, there was no Space Shuttle with the name Kon-Tiki.
