The KGB (Russian: Комитет государственной безопасности) is the main intelligence service of the Soviet Union. They are instrumental in Margo Madison's betrayal of the United States and eventual defection.

History[]

Background[]

The KGB was founded in 1954, as the chief security agency for the Soviet Union. It was the eventual successor to the Stalinist era NKVD.

They have maintained a role at Star City since at least prior to the first Moon landing in 1969.[1] Due to their goal of intelligence gathering, they have also played a major role in technology theft, being particularly useful at human intelligence. They utilized these skills in fostering a relationship between then Roscosmos director Sergei Nikulov and director of Johnson Space Center, Margo Madison. The relationship under the handling of Irina Morozova[2] resulted in Buran being saved from a potential disaster.[3] As well as Madison passing classified information on the NERVA engine design, that allowed Roscosmos to meet the 1994 launch window for Mars.[4]

They have also shown their willingness to use force when necessary. After Nikulov is intially unable to persuade Madison for the engine design, she is threatened with exposure for the information she has already shared. After she again refuses, the agents strangle Nikulov in front of her, prompting her to share the design.[5]

They are also highly skilled at more covert intelligence gathering, having assets in at least the US justice department and at Happy Valley. The former allowing the agency to exfiltrate Madison to the Soviet Union before she is arrested by the FBI.[6]

The KGB is made up of different directorates, who may or may not speak to each other. This comes to the fore during the 2003 Soviet coup d'état, with differing directorates supporting either side of the coup. A phone number given to Madison anonymously, is discovered to be a trap number for one directorate masquerading as another. This leads to confusion between differing parties.[7]

While the American CIA is their traditional rival, they have shown the ability to work with them as partners. During the Goldilocks capturing mission, communications equipment is stolen at Happy Valley. KGB asset Timur Avilov and CIA agent Mike Bishop are mobilized to investigate the theft. Working together, they discover Helios worker Miles Dale is the leader of the black market on the base, and interrogate him for information.[8]
