The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) is a several days lasting conference for actors in the discipline of astronautics yearly held in London
. The meetings consist of plenary sessions, lectures and panel discussions. The IAC is attended by the heads and senior executives of the world's space agencies, as well as from the private sector. The annual event took place for the first time in 1950.
History[]
Margo Madison and Sergei Nikulov both attended the congress since at least 1984. Over the years, they got to know each other better and developed a friendship that gradually took a romantic turn.[1]
In 1992, one of the main topics of the conference was the Race to Mars. A panel discussion was scheduled with Helios Aerospace CEO Dev Ayesa and the directors of Roscosmos and NASA, Sergei and Margo. However, Sergei missed that panel because of "complications".
Later that day, in her hotel room, Margo was blackmailed by KGB agent Peter Strauss with secretly taken pictures, after she refused to give Sergei NASA's nuclear engine design he had begged her for. After another KGB henchman threatened to strangle Sergei, Strauss gave her a phone number and 24 hours to think about the situation.[1]

Notes[]
There is some discrepancy in the numbering of the IAC in the show. At the beginning of episode 3x03, in a flashback to 1984, the caption reads "27th annual IAC". Later in the episode, in 1992, the caption reads "35th annual IAC". However, only seconds later, a placard is shown with "43rd International Astronautical Congress."
In reality, the IAC is held annually since 1950. 1992 was the 43rd IAC, hold in Washington D.C. It seems, that the captions in the episode are wrong, but the placard is correct.
Behind the scenes[]
In For All Mankind, the congress seems to be located always in London. In reality, the IAC is hold by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), a non-governmental organization, and hosted by one of its national society members, with the location changing every year.
