Drink it today, piss it tomorrow, eat it the day after.

Hydroponics is a term referring to growing plants without soil by using water-based mineral nutrient solutions in aqueous solvents. In a hydroponic system, plants grow with their roots exposed to the nutritious liquid. Hydroponics is a key technology when it comes to growing food in closed systems outside Earth, like on other celestial bodies or inside a spaceship. Other terms referring to hydroponic systems are hydroponic gardening, indoor farming, or vertical farming.
History[]
For their 1994 crewed Mars missions, all competitors had to deal with the issue of producing their own food, to not be solely depandent of stocked provisions only, have some additional fresh food, and also to further study the possibilities of hydroponics for future long term missions. NASA had sent a hydroponic module to Mars as part of their uncrewed support mission sent to the planet's surface prior to Sojourner-1's landing. Helios has a big hydroponic module on their spacecraft Phoenix.
Helios[]
Helios has plenty of space on the Phoenix which has a big module serving as a hydroponic vertical garden, led by the ship's botanist Zizzo Glover. Zizzo grew different kind of salads and other vegetables and used the recycled human waste of the crew as fertilizer.[1]
NASA[]
The hydroponic module of NASA's Happy Valley base was initially called The Swamp. As a biologist, Kelly Baldwin was responsible for the hydroponic garden, growing fresh food for the crew on the base.
One day in early 1995, Kelly and Alexei Poletov had sex inside The Swamp.[2]
After the catastrophic landslide that burried the Helios base, all crews headed to Happy Valley, and the remaining Helios HAB rover docked directly to NASA's hydroponic module, which by that time was now called The Jungle.
In fall 1995, in her eighth month of pregnancy, Kelly had a breakdown and fell unconscious while working in The Jungle. She was found lying on the floor by her father, Ed Baldwin, and was immediately examined by Dr. Mayakovsky, who diagnosed her with pre-eclampsia.[3]
