Graciana Rosales was the wife of Octavio Rosales and the mother of Aleida. Together with Aleida and her family, they watched the Soviet Moon landing on TV on June 26, 1969, although her doctor had ordered her to rest. Only a few days later, on June 30, Graciana died.[1]
History[]
The whole Rosales family was gathering around the TV on the night of the first Moon landing in Parras de la Fuente, Mexico. Although Aleida was a little bored of all the talking, Graciana wanted to watch this important event together with her daughter, so she would always remember it. She said to her, that this is something very special and the beginning of the future. She told Aleida that she would be part of this future, and maybe one day, she could even be going to the Moon herself.
Her husband reminded her that she should be in bed, as she was apparently ill and her doctor had told her to do so, but Graciana insisted that she wanted to watch this. Four days later, Graciana died from her illness.
Around three weeks later, Octavio decided to immigrate illegally to the United States with Aleida. Before they boarded a pickup car that would bring them to the green border, Aleida visited the grave of her mother one last time and lit a candle.[1]
Aleida later named her own daughter, Graciana Diaz, after her mother.[2]
