Gillespie Field is a public airport in El Cajon, California
, located about 18.5 km (11.5 miles) northeast of San Diego. In 1961, Gordo Stevens and Tracy met there and fell in love, after Gordo took her for an assumingly first flight lesson on a Cessna 195.[1]
General information[]
The area was commissioned in 1942 as a Marine Corps parachutists facility and named Camp Gillespie after Marine Lt. Archibald H. Gillespie. In December 1946, the County of San Diego leased the location and turned it into a public airport, granting ownership of the facility by the federal government in 1952.[2]
