Coding Help
This is a help page about referencing in articles.
As stated in our manual of style everything should be referenced to the related episode. This adds useful additional information to the content so readers can always identify in what episode things happened or, for example in case of dates or other detailed information, are taken from.
Beside the internal referencing to episodes or bonus videos, all information from external sources has always to be referenced as well.
Referencing episodes
Templates
- There is one major template used for referencing episodes, plus a variant of it for references including screenshots.
- Additionally, there is a template for referencing bonus videos.
1) Main reference template: {{TVref}}
{{TVref|S_No|Ep_No}} {{TVref|S_No|Ep_No|infos}} {{TVref|S_No}}
- Examples:
{{TVref|1}}→ For All Mankind TV series, season 1 {{TVref|2|4}}→ For All Mankind TV series, season 2, episode 4, "Pathfinder" {{TVref|3|10}}→ For All Mankind TV series, season 3, episode 10, "Stranger in a Strange Land" {{TVref|4|1|Press review}}→ For All Mankind TV series, season 4, episode 1, "Glasnost" (Press review) {{TVref|4|4|28:47}}→ For All Mankind TV series, season 4, episode 4, "House Divided" (28:47)
2) Variant including screenshot(s): (up to 3) {{TVref-s}}
{{TVref-s|filename}} {{TVref-s|filename_1|filename_2|filename_3}}
- Examples:
{{TVref-s|FAM 401 15.03 Ed Baldwin age.png}}- → For All Mankind, 4x01, "Glasnost" → Screenshot
{{TVref-s|FAM 307 43.00 Mission status board.png|FAM 307 43.03 Mission status board.png}}- → For All Mankind, 3x07, "Bring It Down" → Screenshot-1 / Screenshot-2
Note that all screenshots should be from the same episode, as the season/episode information is extracted from the filename of the first image.
3) Bonus videos: {{BVref}}
{{BVref|year}} {{BVref|year|info}}
- Examples:
{{BVref|1992}}- → Bonus Video: Another Giant Leap: 1984-1992 - Presidential Primaries (1992)
{{BVref|2000|01:34}}- → Bonus Video: Leap Into a New Millenium: 1996-2001 - Election Night (2000) (01:34)
External references
- For references from external sources, like magazine articles, social media posts, YT-videos, or any other, use one of the external link templates.
- Most of the time this will be {{External link}} (for all kind of external links), {{Twitter link}}, or {{Youtube link}}.
Archiving
- Things on the internet tend to disappear unexpectedly. Referenced sources may become unavailable when a websites close, change its name, or owner, or the URL pattern, etc. Social media posts are often deleted, and videos on YouTube can be removed or YT-accounts closed.
- It's therefore a good idea to use a web-archive service to keep archived versions of websites, posts and videos.
Web-archive services
Websites
- archive.org
- The best known web-archive service is archive.org with its Wayback Machine.
- This is the preferred service to use for all kind of regular websites, magazines, articles, etc.
- However, for some sites like YouTube or some social media sites, archive.org is not the best choice, and sometimes may not work at all. See the sections below for alternative services.
- Tipps:
- There are archive.org browser add-ons for most common browsers that allow you to archive any website you're on by a single click.
- Archive.org can also be used to archive images or videos not available on the web by uploading them manually. However, you need to create a user-account to do this.
YouTube videos
- ghostarchive.org
- To archive YT-videos, ghostarchive.org can be used.
- It will archive the video in low quality only, but this is still better than no archive at all.
- Issues:
- Since some time in 2024, the service often fails to archive YT-videos, loading forever or timing out with a "502 Bad Gateway" error. As of September 2025, the problem still persists. Unfortunately, there is no known relieable replacement to archive YT videos.
- Very important videos could technically be downloaded and then uploaded to archive.org manually (user-account needed).
Social media sites
- archive.ph
- To archive social media posts from Twitter or Instagram, archive.ph (also known as archive.is & archive.today) is most suitable. Other services often fail to correctly archive posts from these social media sites.
- Another option is to make screenshots from the posts and upload them to the wiki.
Templates
- The template {{External link}}, which is most often used for general external links, provides an integrated archive option. It is optimized for use with archive.org, with a simplified syntax for that service, but allows for all other archive services as well. Read the template's doc for how to add an archive link.
- For all other link templates, the template {{arch}} can be used, adding it after the reference-link inside the reference tags. For details, see its documentation.
Reference tags
- Reference tags can look like this:
| 1 | <ref>reference</ref> |
|
| 2 | <ref name="refname">reference</ref> |
<ref name="refname"/>
|
| 3 | <ref group="groupname" name="refname">reference</ref> |
<ref group="groupname" name="refname"/>
|
| 1 | A single stand-alone reference tag. |
| 2 | A named reference tag. This is the preferred method. Named ref-tags allow to be re-used, like shown in the 2nd column above. The reference has only to be defined once per article, and further references to the same episode can use the shortened tag. |
| 3 | A named and grouped reference tag. This allows to have different groups of references. For example, beside the "standard" references there could be a group "note" and/or a group "BTS" and those references can then be directed and displayed inside a "Notes" or a "Behind the scenes" section. |
Edit tools
- If you're using the source editer (the "real" source editor, also "2010 editor", not the source mode of the visual editor), which is highly recommended generally, you can use the EditTools from the box below the edit window.
- Just position your cursor in the edit window, then click on one of the ref-tags and then on the suitable ref-template, and it will be inserted at the cursor's position, ready to fill in the parameters.
Reference names
Episodes
- The preferred method is using version 2 from above, named reference tags.
- For consistency reason, references should use the 3-digit episode-code as name. However, since reference-names cannot begin with a number, we prepend a colon to that number.
- Examples:
<ref name=":302">{{TVref|3|2}}</ref><ref name=":302"/><ref name=":401">{{TVref|4|1|Press review}}</ref><ref name=":401"/>
Bonus videos
- For references to bonus videos, we usually use the following pattern:
S<S-No>-bonus-<year>- Examples:
<ref name="S2-bonus-1978">{{BVref|1978}}</ref><ref name="S2-bonus-1978"/><ref name="S4-bonus-2000">BVref|2000</ref><ref name="S4-bonus-2000"/>
- → You can also copy/paste it from the list below
Other references
- For references that do not refer to a specific episode, use a meaningful name.
- Examples:
<ref name="age">Stated by the actor in (link-to-article)</ref><ref name="age"/><ref name="missions">Mission boards in S2 + S3</ref><ref name="missions"/>
Copy/paste list
Below is a selection of reference tags that can be copy/pasted for re-use in articles.
