For All Mankind Wiki

This page is about links on the For All Mankind Wiki, how they are formatted, what link template exist, and what the attached tags or icon you may sometimes see mean.

General information

Links can generally be divided into several categories or types.
One possible differentiation is:
  • Internal links
↳ Links that link to other pages on this wiki
  • External links
↳ Links that link to external sites
↳ These can be further divided into
    • Interwiki links
↳ Links to other Fandom or Wikimedia wikis
    • Other external links
↳ Links to any other external sites
Another possible differentiation is how they are used on a page:
  • Inline links
↳ Links within text in articles
  • Other links
↳ Links in lists, like in "See also" or "External links" sections

Behavior

Internal and external links behave differently. Internal links normally open in the same browser tab, while external links open in a new tab/window, unless it's an interwiki link.
Technically, whether a link opens in the same or a new tab depends on the formatting:
  • Links that can be formatted using the double square bracket syntax (e.g. [[link|linktext]] ) open in the same tab. That's true for links to pages on the same wiki, and for links to other wikis using the interwiki link syntax.
  • Links that have to be formatted using the single square bracket syntax (e.g. [link linktext] ) open in a new tab. This is true for links to external sites that use the full URL, like https://example.com.
Sometimes, internal links will behave like external links. That's true if the link contains a query string. This can be the case for links to log entries or revisions, or with other special pages. Whenever a link contains parameters passed in the URL, it has to be formatted using the single square bracket syntax, which results in behaving like an external link and opening in a new tab.
An example for this would be a link to a specific revision like this: Project:Licensing?oldid=25465
To create such a link, either the full URL has to be used:
[https://for-all-mankind.fandom.com/wiki/Project:Licensing?oldid=25465 Project:Licensing?oldid=25465]
or the magic word {{fullurl:}}:
[{{fullurl:Project:Licensing|oldid=25465}} Project:Licensing?oldid=25465]

General external links
On the For All Mankind Wiki, we use templates to create external link. There is a large collection of different templates for different types of links. More about this is described in the sections further down.
All our inline templates for external links, i.e. links you see within text, have either a specific tag, or an external link icon appended. This is to help recognize the type of link. On articles that's most often links to Wikipedia, which have a W attached, or links to IMDb and any other external site, which have the external link icon attached.
Outside the main namespace articles, like on documentations or help pages, you will often see links with other tags attached. See the list of all tags used on external links on this wiki and what they mean in the table beside.
All these links are created with dedicated link templates. Read more about this in the next section.

Link templates

There are lots of internal and external link templates available on this wiki.
External link templates are further devided into inline templates (with a tag attached), and info-icon templates (with an info-icon in front).

Inline link templates

Internal links

Internal inline link templates exist to link to other namespaces than the main namespace.
There are templates to link to pages in the following namespaces:
  • Project (For All Mankind Wiki)
  • File
  • User
  • Template
  • Category
  • Module
  • Special
There are also templates to link to anchors on the same page and to interactive maps.
Beside these, there are specific link templates to link to seasons, episodes, and the series.

External links

External inline link templates exist to link to various Fandom, Wikimedia, and other external sites.
Links to other Fandom or Wikimedia wikis use interwiki syntax and open in the same tab, while links to other sites open in a new tab. See section Behavior above for details.

Info-icon link templates

Info-icon link templates are used for external links in lists, like in "External link" sections or references. They place an info-icon in front of the link.
There is a collection of such templates to link to certain sites, plus one general template that can be used to link to any external site.
There is a large selection of icon templates and even more external link icons that can be used together with the general template when linking to external sites that don't have their own template.
