For All Mankind Wiki

This image policy is an important part of this wiki's rules, policies & guidelines. Please read it carefully.

General

  • All images & graphics uploaded to this wiki must be
    • named meaningful
    • categorized correctly
    • contain proper licensing information
    • use one of the File information (FI) templates
  • Most of this (beside the naming) can be automated by using the correct FI template.
See also the help article File info page.

File format

  • The .png format is the preferred file format for any images, especially for screenshots.
  • .jpg is acceptable if no png version is available.
  • .gif should be generally avoided.

Quality

  • Images should always be of good quality and high resolution.
  • Screenshots should be taken from a HD resolution (1920 x 960 px) source. If the focus is on only a part of the image, it can and should be cropped to that part, but this should still be done from an originally HD source.
  • Images should never contain letter-boxing. Letter-boxed images have to be cropped.

Important notes

  • Low quality images and images with meaningless filenames will become deletion candidates and will eventually be removed.
  • If real world images are used in series articles, they have to be either inside the Behind the scenes section, or it must be clearly noted in the caption that they are not taken from the show! This does not apply to real world imagery that appeared and was taken from the show.
  • Before uploading new screenshots, always check if the image does not exist already. See section Uploading below.

Naming

All images must have a meaningful filename!
Filenames like 563147-698542-31877-5d88e.jpg or Screenshot_2023-08-16_14:37.png are not acceptable.
For screenshots from episodes, bonus videos, trailers, and some other type of images we have a naming pattern that has to be strictly followed. This ensures that images are always sorted chronologically in their categories and gives visitors and editors clear information about from where it was taken.
The correct filename pattern is also important for many templates that read various information out of filenames and use it for categorization, to display information, and to tag certain characters and produce auto-generated galleries.
In the naming conventions listed below, the following terms are used:
<epcode> The 3-digit episode code in the format "SEE", e.g.
101 for season 1 episode 1
310 for season 3 episode 10
<timestamp> Timestamp of the episode where the screenshot was taken.
Format: mm.ss → Delimiter must be a period, NOT a colon!
Minutes and seconds must be 2 digits each, e.g. 00.42 / 03.08 / 24.00
If the timestamp is over 1 hour, translate it to minutes, e.g. 1:08:14 becomes 68.14.
<season> Single digit season number
<description> Please choose a short but meaningful description. It should include the name(s) of the character(s) in the image, as this is scanned by some templates to tag characters. It should also include the location, if applicable. Keep in mind that visitors and editors may search for images of characters, locations or technologies. Think about what search terms you would use to find that image.
delimiter The delimiter between all parts of the filenames must always be a single space. Do NOT use an underline!
Note that files not following our naming convention will become delete candidates and be eventually removed from the wiki.

Naming convention

The naming pattern varies slightly depending on the type of image:

Screenshots from episodes

This is by far the largest group of images. Most uploaded images fall into this group.
Naming pattern:
FAM <epcode> <timestamp> <description>.ext
Example:
FAM 309 43.31 Dimitri Mayakovsky.png
FAM 110 64.17 Ed Baldwin Jamestown.png
Matching fileinfo template: {{Screenshot}}

Screenshots from press reviews

This only applies for screenshots from the season opener press reels, seen at the beginning of each season's premiere episode. The only difference to the above is the additional "PR".
Naming pattern:
FAM <epcode> PR <timestamp> <description>.ext
Example:
FAM 201 PR 00.45 Reagan wins election.png
Matching fileinfo template: {{Screenshot PR}}

Screenshots from AppleTV bonus videos

For the bonus videos connecting S1 + S2 and S2 + S3, there were initially compilations available on YouTube. Therefore, the timestamp of these compilations was used for screenshots from these videos. However, the YT-account with those videos was deleted at some point, and those compiltaions are not online anymore. (One of them is online on another account, but is not cut exactly the same.)
For any screenshots of upcoming bonus videos, instead of the timestamp, the year the bonus video is covering shall be used.
New naming pattern:
FAM Bonus <year-span> <year> <description>.ext
Example:
FAM Bonus 1996-2001 2001 Mars base.png
Old naming pattern:
FAM Bonus <year-span> <timestamp> <description>.ext
Example:
FAM Bonus 1975-1982 05.00 Sea Dragon launch.png
Matching fileinfo template: {{Screenshot BV}}

Screenshots from trailers or teasers

Naming pattern:
FAM S<season> Trailer <description>.ext
FAM S<season> Teaser <description>.ext
Example:
FAM S3 Trailer Astronauts on Mars.png
FAM S4 Teaser NASA Mission Control.png
If there is more than one trailer or teaser,
add "-#" behind "Trailer" or "Teaser".
FAM S3 Trailer-2 Helios rover.png
FAM S4 Teaser-2 Mars base.png
Matching fileinfo template: {{Screenshot TR}}

Screenshots from Time Capsule

Naming pattern:
FAM 15<chapter> TC <description>.ext
Example:
FAM 152 TC LEM model.png
Matching fileinfo template: {{Screenshot TC}}

Promotional images of characters

These are character portraits used on the wiki's main page and on some main character infoboxes. They are usually chosen by an admin.
These are often cropped versions of episode screenshots, but can also be official promos from AppleTV.
Note
  • "Promotional" here means that they are (or have been) used as promotional images in this wiki. This is not to be confused with general Apple TV promotional imagery. Although official Apple TV images may fall into this group (if it's character stills used as promo in the wiki), most will not.
  • Up to season 3, the naming for these images is inconsistent.
  • Starting with season 4, they should use one of the following formats:
Naming pattern:
1) Same as episode screenshots (preferred, if applicable)
FAM <epcode> <timestamp> <description>.ext
2) If timestamp is unknown but the episode number, use:
FAM <epcode> <description>.ext
3) If episode number is also missing, use:
FAM S<season> <description>.ext
Example:

FAM 402 15.14 Kelly Baldwin (promo).png

FAM 401 Danielle Poole promotional.png

FAM S4 Ellen Wilson promo.png

Official episode images

These are the official AppleTV episode images, used in each episode's infobox.
Naming pattern:
FAM <epcode> <episode-title>.ext
Example:
FAM 102 He Built the Saturn V.jpg
Matching fileinfo template: {{Episode image}}

Behind the scenes images

Behind the scene images should be named in one of the following patterns, depending on what is known about from which episode/season they are. The BTS fileinfo template will categorize them to a season subcategory if that info is found in the filename, or else to the main BTS image category. The season subcats are used for the behind the scenes DPL galleries.

Note
  • For the BTS galleries, the <description> part of the filename is used as image captions. Name these files extra meaningful.
  • Some options exist, that will be translated for the caption:
    1.  -  (<space>-<space>) will be translated into a line-break.
    2. Numbers in parenthesis will be stripped from <description>.
This allows naming like BTS S2 Moon set (1).jpg / BTS S2 Moon set (2).jpg / ..., resulting in the same caption "Moon set" and those images sorted by the number.
It also means that something like (1974) would be stripped, so don't use numbers in parenthesis for anything else than same captions.
Only pure numbers are affected, something like (S3) would still be displayed.
Naming pattern:
BTS <epcode> <description>.ext
BTS S<season> <description>.ext
BTS <description>.ext
Examples:
BTS 401 Filming in Sofia.jpg
BTS S3 Oval office.jpg
BTS Sony studios.jpg
Matching fileinfo template: {{BTS image}}
Note that this template does not everything automatically like the other ones!
Read the documentation for its usage.

Concept art

Concept art is handled similar to BTS images, but is named per season only, not per episode, even if it would be known.
Concept art is also included in some of the automatically produced BTS galleries and accepts the same extra naming pattern like BTS images.
See the note for "Behind the scenes images" above for this pattern.
Naming pattern:
CA S<season> <description>.ext
Examples:
CA S2 Jamestown nuclear plant.jpg
Matching fileinfo template: {{Concept art}}
Note that this template does not everything automatically like the other ones!
Read the documentation for its usage.

Actor & crew portraits

Actor and crew portraits (used in the actor or crew article's infobox) should be named with just the person's full name, without any additions.
Naming pattern:
<first-name> <surname>.ext
Examples:
Joel Kinnaman.jpg
Matching fileinfo template: {{Actor portrait}}

Other images

Any other images that are not from the show (e.g. real world images that are not BTS, concept art, or actor/crew portraits), or are otherwise not covered in the list above, should always be named meaningful.
If the image is related to a season or episode (like promotional images of a certain episode or season), it should be identifiable in the filename.

Graphics

The term "Graphics" covers icons, logos, patches, flags, emblems, maps, and any other graphic images that is not a screenshot or photograph, or covered in one of the above sections.
There are no general naming rules for all graphics. For some types, there are, for others not. Generally, as always, the filenames must be meaningful.
Browse throught the subcategories of Graphics to see how they're usually named, or ask an admin.

Some common icon types:
Type Info Categories
Icons No general rule.
Most start with Icon-, and for some type of icons this is mandatory.
Browse the categories or ask an admin.
Icons
Page status indicators Must follow the pattern depending on its type.

Licensing & categorization

All uploaded images and graphics have to be categorized. Also, proper licensing information has to be added to all files.
For most types of images, this can all be done by using one single template, as outlined below.

Images from the show

For most types of images, specifically for screenshots from the show as described in the naming convention above, there is a specific template that does all the things needed automatically. The only requirements for this to work are that the image is properly named as stated above, and that the matching template is used.
All these specific templates can be applied directly when uploading in the summary field of Special:Upload, or by editing the file info page afterwards.
These templates will correctly categorize the image, add a file information section to the file page, and add the "Fair Use" copyright template. Some of them will also automatically tag characters, if their names are found in the filename.
There are 1 generic and 10 specific templates that can be used for this task. Which one to use depends on the type of the image.
The specific templates are:
#TemplateUsage
1{{Screenshot}}For any screenshots taken from episodes (unless point 2 or 6 apply).
2{{Screenshot PR}}For screenshots from the press reviews in the season premiere episode.
3{{Screenshot BV}}For screenshots from bonus videos.
4{{Screenshot TR}}For screenshots from trailers & teasers.
5{{Screenshot TC}}For screenshots from the Time Capsule iOS app.
6{{Screenshot promo}}For promotional images on the wiki's front page or in infoboxes (usually used by admins only).
7{{Episode image}}For the official episode images.
8{{BTS image}}For behind the scenes images.
9{{Concept art}}For concept art.
10{{Actor portrait}}For actor & crew portraits.
  • Click this button for a more detailed description of each of these templates:   show/hide info
  • For full documentation, visit the individual template page, or see the documentation of their parent template {{File information}}, which can also be used directly for any other kind of images not covered by one of the specific templates above.

Notes:
  • Filename mode above depends on whether the image is related to a given episode or to a season (or none of them).
  • There are some tricks that can be applied when naming the file, where the <description> part of the filename will influence the formatting of the caption used in the automatically created behind the scenes galleries.
Read more about this in this documentation.
  • This template does not everything automatically like the other ones. For example, there should be a source for the image added manually, and perhaps a date, location, or other details could be added.
For details, see the parameter section of that template's documentation.

  • Same as for the BTS images, the way the <description> part of the filename is chosen will influence how the caption is formatted in the DPL galleries.
Read more about this in this documentation.
  • This template does not everything automatically like most of the other ones.
For example, there should be a source for the image provided and perhaps a short description could be added in the "detail" or "notes" parameter.

Other images

Images that do not fall into one of the categories explained above, like real world images (except behind-the-scene images, concept art, or actor/crew portraits), graphics, icons, patches, etc., also have to be properly categorized and licensed. The {{File information}} template can be used for these to add the same information box the specific templates above produce.

Information & licensing

Adding licensing and file information to other images and graphics should be done by applying one or some of the following templates to the file page, in that order:
Template Usage Notes
{{File information}} Adds a table with general file infos to the file page. recommended
A file source template Declares the source of the file.
Examples: {{From Wikimedia}}  •  {{From Fandom}}  •  {{Self}}
optional
A license template Defines the licensing of the file. mandatory
{{Fileinfo box}} Can be used to add additional, license or source related infos like courtesy & credits, changes, source and/or archive-links of the file or source. optional
{{Trademarked}} Should be additionally applied irrespective of the license if the image or graphic contains trademarked things, e.g. in logos or icons. recommended

Categorization

Browse through the subcategories of Images or Graphics to find the best matching categories for the file.
Categories can be added in the traditional way through wikitext, or can be defined using the {{File information}} template's parameters.
Some of the above templates will add additional tracking categories.

Personal images

  • Users are allowed to upload not show-related images to be used on their userpage as long as it's not overdone.
  • These images have to be categorized as User images.
  • As all images, they have to use a descriptive name and must be licensed properly.

Uploading

Avoid duplicates

Before uploading new images, especially screenshots from the show, always make sure that image does not exist already.
There are several ways to do this:
  • Since all images on this wiki are categorized, just browse the matching image category.
  • For screenshots, since they have to follow our naming convention, just look if there is already an image with the same or almost the same timestamp. Every episode has its own image category, named Images episode xxx, where "xxx" is the 3-digit episode code. You can find a certain episode image category by browsing the higher level category Episode images.
  • Most duplicates are uploaded right after new episodes are published. To check recent uploads, go to Special:NewFiles (can also be accessed through the "Explore" menu → "Images") and browse through the last couple of images to see if the image already exists.
⇨ Duplicates of already existing images will be deleted.

Upload options

See also: Help: Upload on Community Central
There are several ways to upload files:
  • Use the upload page Special:Upload.
This upload form is linked in the right rail, as well as in the dropdown menu in the top right corner.
If you use that form, you can add the matching screenshot template (as introduced above) right to the summary field and don't have to worry about anything else.
With all other upload options, you have to add the info and license templates manually after uploading by editing the file info page.
  • Files can also be uploaded in the source and visual editor, and on Special:NewFiles.

Mass uploading

  • The uploader in the source and visual editor allows to upload several images in one go. However, if you use that option, you have to manually edit each uploaded file afterwards to add licensing and categorization.
  • Another option is to install the developer script UploadMultipleFiles. This adds the option to upload multiple files to the upload form on Special:Upload, allowing to upload several images together while assigning them all the same screenshot template in the summary field.
    • If you install that script, make sure to also add that code to bypass the license check:
      mw.config.set('UMFBypassLicenseCheck', true);
This is important since all screenshot templates already add the correct licensing.
