For general infos about this type of pages see File description pages on Community Central.

This article is about the editable section of the file info pages and its preferred structure.

General information

A file info page, also file or media description page, is the wiki page automatically created for each uploaded file, where general information about that file are displayed. It contains a preview of the file, including links to the original file and different resolutions, the file history, the file's usage, and any metadata. The file info page is also used to categorize files. Beside all that, it contains an editable section used to provide information about the file, its source, and the licensing. File pages have their own namespace, "File:".

Minimal requirements

Every file uploaded to the For All Mankind Wiki must at least contain some licensing information and categorization. There is a variety of templates that can be used for this, they are collected in the category copyright templates and further explained on this help page.

Preferred structure

Preferably, the editable section of the file info page should consist of a "Summary" section containing "File information" and "Licensing" subsections.

File information

"File information" should contain general information about the file, which can vary depending on the type of file. Examples are descriptions, location, author, date, etc., or duration and resolution (for videos). File information can also contain links to other versions of that file (e.g. a full and a cropped version), or to similar files, or to related articles.

Unless for the types of images where there is a specific template for (see below), the template {{File information}} should be used here. It contains many different fields and offers great flexibility in what information to display.

Licensing

The "Licensing" section can optionally contain a source template, declaring the source of the file (e.g. from Wikimedia or self provided). If a source template is used, it should be the first in this section.

This section always needs a license template informing about the license the file is released. For screenshots and other show related images this is mostly "Fair use", for files from other sources, like for example from Wikimedia Commons, Flickr, or an online icon repository, the license can vary. Sometimes a file may need more than one license, e.g. if the image is a compilation out of several original images.

Important
Always make sure to add the correct license, and never use copyright restricted material!
You as the uploader are responsible for the use of every image you upload and for ensuring that the copyright information you have provided is correct.

Below any license template(s), the template {{Fileinfo box}} can optionally be added to provide additional source or license related information. This template can be used to pay courtesy, credit author(s), describe what changes were made, and/or provide additional sources, including web-archive links.

Finally, if the file contains logos or wordmarks, in most cases the template {{Trademarked}} should be added to indicate that the file may contain parts which are protected by a trademark.

Specific file-info templates

For the most commonly uploaded files, which are screenshots from the show or other show related sources (bonus videos, trailers, ...), there are specific templates which do everything needed with just one template. These templates will add the structure explained above, with a file information section showing file related details, followed by a license section with the {{fairuse}} license template in it. They will also categorize the file correctly, and some of them automatically tag characters if their name is found in the filename.

Note
For this to work, the file needs to be named correctly according to our file naming convention. This is very important, not only for this, but also for many other templates that extract information from filenames.

These templates are:

#TemplateUsage
1{{Screenshot}}For any screenshots taken from episodes (unless point 2 or 6 apply).
2{{Screenshot PR}}For screenshots from the press reviews in the season premiere episode.
3{{Screenshot BV}}For screenshots from bonus videos.
4{{Screenshot TR}}For screenshots from trailers & teasers.
5{{Screenshot TC}}For screenshots from the Time Capsule iOS app.
6{{Screenshot promo}}For promotional images on the wiki's front page or in infoboxes (usually used by admins only).
7{{Episode image}}For the official episode images.
8{{BTS image}}For behind the scenes images.
9{{Concept art}}For concept art.
10{{Actor portrait}}For actor & crew portraits.

For a full description of these templates read their documentations. For a summary containing usage and appropriate naming, you can click here to open a table with that information right below.

Depending on the pattern found, output & categorization will vary. In case no pattern matches, the full filename is used.

BTS-SC 101 ... BTS-SC S2 ... BTS-SC ...
Notes:
  • Filename mode above depends on whether the image is related to a given episode or to a season (or none of them).
  • There are some tricks that can be applied when naming the file, where the <description> part of the filename will influence the formatting of the caption used in the automatically created behind the scenes galleries.
    Read more about this in this documentation.
  • This template does not everything automatically like the other ones. For example, there should be a source for the image added manually, and perhaps a date, location, or other details could be added.
    For details, see the parameter section of that template's documentation.
9 {{Concept art}}
{{Concept art}}

Star City ready
For concept art.
Categorization:
Concept art season n
Concept art Star City season n

CA S<seasonNo> <description>.ext
For Star City:
CA-SC S<seasonNo> <description>.ext
Example:
CA S3 Helios Mars HAB.jpg

CA-SC S1 N3 rocket.jpg
Notes:
  • Same as for the BTS images, the way the <description> part of the filename is chosen will influence how the caption is formatted in the DPL galleries.
    Read more about this in this documentation.
  • This template does not everything automatically like most of the other ones.
    For example, there should be a source for the image provided and perhaps a short description could be added in the "detail" or "notes" parameter.
    For details, see the parameter section of that template's documentation.
10 {{Actor portrait}}
{{Actor portrait}}

Star City ready
For actor & crew portraits.
Categorization:
Portraits of cast and crew
Character tagging:
No
File naming convention:

Usage

Apply templates on Special:Upload

Apply templates on Special:Upload

Applying these templates is fairly simple. In most cases, there are no parameters needed. However, there are parameters to tag or untag characters, or to add additional information like other file versions, if needed. If this is the case, read the documentation of that template to learn how to do this.

The easiest way is to apply the matching template right when uploading the file. If you use Special:Upload, which is the upload form linked in the right rail or in the dropdown-menu in the top right corner, just put the template into the "Summary" field of that form. Right below that field, you can find a box with all the templates mentioned above in it. Click into the summary field to activate it, then click on the correct template, and it will be copied to that field. Hit upload and you're done. All information will be extracted from the filename, if it was named correctly.

If you upload your file(s) through any other page than Special:Upload, like with the mass uploader in the source or visual editor, you will have to add the template(s) manually afterwards by editing the file's info page(s).
In this case, the template code is slightly different: You have to add "s" as parameter 1 to have the template create the "Summary" header that is otherwise added by the upload form.
Example: Instead of {{screenshot}} use {{screenshot|s}}
This applies to all ten templates listed above.

Examples

Example of a file using the template {{screenshot}}
FI - screenshot - output FAM 104 54.45 Wayne + Karen watch Apollo 15 launch.png

Everything you can see in this file's "Summary" section is created by the template {{screenshot}}.
All needed information is extracted from the filename only.
In this case, this is the epsode number, the timestamp, and the characters seen in the image. Out of this information, it also displays the episode name and creates links to the related episode image categories. It tags the characters, links to their article, and feeds the corresponding character image categories, which are then used to display a character gallery on a subpage of that character's article.
Example of a file using the template {{actor portrait}}
FI - actor portrait - output Lenny Jacobson.jpg

This shows the summary created by {{actor portrait}}.
It links to the actor's article, adds the "Fair Use" license, and categorizes the image correctly.
