This article is about categories and categorization on the For All Mankind Wiki, how it works, how they're accessible, and how it should be done.

General information

Categories are an important MediaWiki tool to structure wikis and group pages and content together. They help organize and navigate pages and find related or similar content. Categories are also used for tracking and reporting, for example of errors in template calls.
There are different ways how categories can be used and organized. Some wikis add pages to as many matching categories as possible. Another approach is creating a category tree, where pages are only in the most relevant subcategory.
On the For All Mankind Wiki, we use both systems, or a mix of them, depending on the page or article.

Categories on the FAM wiki

On the For All Mankind Wiki, we have a very fine tuned system of categorization.
In general, categories are organized to build a category tree, with pages categorized into the most relevant categories only. However, some type of pages are also categorized into all matching categories. In particular, that's true for persons, i.e. character, actor, or crew articles.
Categories are also highly used for tracking, maintenance, and statistics.

How categories are added

Most categories on this wiki are added automatically through templates. In most cases, this is done through the infobox template on the page, which automatically categorizes the pages it is used on depending on the infobox parameters.
Only in rare cases manual categorization is needed, and even in most of these cases the categories are usually added through template parameters rather than by adding them directly to the page with [[Category:Something]].
  • Always look at the documentation of the infobox template used for the page for how categorization is handled.
  • The section "Structure of particular pages" in our manual of style also explains how the categorization of the most commen pages works.
Files are automatically categorized through the {{file information}} template or its child templates. Most information is taken from the filename, which is why strictly following our file naming convention is so important.
Files are categorized into all kind of relevant categories, including many tracking categories. Some of these categories are used to create and automatically update the image galleries for episodes and characters using DPL3.

Creating new categories

Warning triangle orange
Please don't create new categories (beside the season/episode related categories for every new season) without talking to an admin first. Because our category system has some complexity and depends on many templates, it usually needs more consideration and often updating relevant templates.
Creating new season related categories is documented in the help page periodic tasks.

Examples

Some examples of pages and how they are categorized:
The character Aleida Rosales is categorized into the following categories:
Her actress, Coral Peña, is categorized into these categories:
The event/mission Apollo 11 is categorized into only 3 categories:

Tracking categories

We use a lot of tracking categories on this wiki. These categories are used for maintenance, or to track various things and create pages like these:
Tracking categories can also be found in the top categories Tracking and Maintenance.
Files are tracked by their file type, source, and license, and some also by their aspect ratio, their usage, or by the user who created them.
Screenshots and other images from the show are tracked by episode, character, and/or type.
Certain icons are tracked in several ways.
Various errors are tracked in various error tracking categories.
Some templates track their usage, and templates using modules are tracked.
Categories are tracked by size.
CSS files are tracked by type and usage, as is the use of TemplateStyles.
Redirects are tracked in 40 subcategories.
