Deke Slayton is the chief of the Astronaut office and Director of Flight Crew Operations. After the Soviets made it on the Moon first, Deke told the NASA crew to get drunk and unleash their anger over the weekend before heading back to work.
He remained chief of the Astronaut office till 1974 when he selected himself for the crew of Apollo 24 and was replaced by Buzz Aldrin.
