In 1983, Danny was a student at the Naval AcademyW at Annapolis. During summer, he worked for Karen at the Outpost, and one day smoked a joint with her, promising to "not tell if you don't". They would confide in each other, with Danny telling her that he had seen her dancing alone to the Elvis Presley song "Don't Be Cruel"W by herself after Shane had died. They would later dance to Billy Swan'sW version of this song together,[3] before he fell in love with her, commencing a short lived affair.[4]

Season 3[]

Sometime before 1990, Danny joined NASA, and was assigned to the Jamestown lunar base, arriving on the base in that year. At some point, he met, dated, and became engaged to Amber.

On July 17th 1992, Danny hosts a wedding to Amber aboard the Polaris Orbital Hotel in Earth's orbit. During the wedding, he dances with Amber to "Don't Be Cruel" by Billy Swan, which Karen looks uneasy about. When a piece of debris from a failed North Korean rocket impacts one of the thrusters of the habitation ring of the space station, the station's spin gravityW begins to rise as the wedding reception continues. After failed repairs by Polaris staff, Danny conducts an unauthorized spacewalk and succeeds in shutting down the failing thruster and saving the station. Immediately after engine shut off, he is struck by a loose tether, although his own harness succeeds in holding him to the station, saving his life, and ensuring no harm came to him.[5]

Later, he cheats on Amber with Jenna, a girl he met at the Outpost. He brings her to his old home and they swim in the pool and start kissing, but then get interrupted by the police after the new owner called them. When the officer realizes that he is Gordo's son, he calls a "Special Services" number at JSC, telling him that "the department has a protocol set up for stuff like this". Danielle Poole comes to pick up Danny and drives him home. There she tells him that he will have to take himself off flight status and that he's out of the Mars program.[1]

The next day, Danny wants to talk with Amber, but gets interrupted by a phone call from Ed Baldwin. Ed tells him that he heard about what happened, and that he has a spot for him at the Helios Mars mission if he wants. Danny accepts, and his talk with Amber doesn't continue further.[1]

During the flight to Mars, Danny secretly gains access to the messages between Ed and Karen. This results in conflicted feelings between his long-standing rage against Ed and his respect and appreciation of him as a father-figure and leader, as well as his continued feelings towards Karen. During a game of cards with Ed, Ed confides in Danny, that Karen had had an affair with someone in the past. When Danny asks if he knows who with, Ed says he does not and that they would be a greasy stain on the floor if he ever found out.[6]

After and injury to his hand on Mars, Danny begins to steal and abuse oxycodone from the medicine cabinet. To counteract the effects of the oxycodone, he also steals dextroamphetamine (Adderall). The addition of these drugs worsens both his anger outbursts and work performance. Ed identifies his addiction and demotes him to communications during the upcoming water drilling mission, along with a warning that if he doesn't improve, he would confine him to quarters on Phoenix until they return to Earth. During the mission, Danny fails tremendously resulting in a disaster with several lives lost, including the only person who witnessed his catastrophic failure, Nick Corrado.[7]

Exile[]

The investigation into the drilling disaster does not uncover Danny's actions that led to the deaths of three crew members, but instead blames Nick. Danny continues to work with the newly combined Happy Valley crew, helping to fix the MSAM and other equipment that was broken during the catastrophe, while being troubled with his actions during the event.[8]

In an attempt to atone for his actions, he volunteers to pilot it during Kelly's rescue attempt to Phoenix, as it is likely to be a suicide mission. After Ed rebuffs his attempts, he admits his actions during the drilling disaster, leading to Ed angrily telling him that his daughter is not a way to absolve his guilt, and that when Ed returns from the mission, there will be a reckoning. Upon Ed's return, Danny is exiled to the North Korean capsule for everyone's safety.[9]

Season 4[]

In the months following his exile, Danielle Poole continued to bring him supplies. Eventually, he begged Poole to take him back to Happy Valley but was denied this. When Ed and Danielle arrived to bring the last of their rations, the two found Danny outside the capsule, lying against a rock in his suit, dead.[10]

Amber was later left to raise Avery alone. Danielle felt guilty over Danny's death, which led to her retirement and living a private life after returning back to Earth in 1997.[11]
