Columbia

Space Shuttle Columbia is an American spacecraft. The spaceplane is one of the ten first generation Space Shuttles in NASA's fleet.

History[]

In one of its first flights, Columbia brought 5 astronauts to the Moon for the Jamestown 36 mission in 1982.

On May 20, 1983, Columbia was parked in lunar orbit, scheduled to return to Earth the following week with the Jamestown crew rotating home. During the massive solar storm that happened the next day, the crew was ordered to move to the hardened shelter on mid-deck. The day after this event, Columbia took Ellen Wilson, as well as Molly Cobb and Wubbo Ockels, who had been exposed to high radiation during the storm, back to Earth.^[1]

In September of the same year, in its mission STS-83-R, Columbia brought back Gordo Stevens to the Moon after a 10 years absence as part of the Jamestown 91 mission, along with astronauts Natalie Bishop, Jonathan Gatos, Mark Tremblay, and White.^[2]

For both 1983 missions, Columbia was piloted by Garrett Reisman and Gibson.

Like the other 9 sister ships, Columbia is still in service in the mid 90s. Early 1995, it was assigned for the Jamestown 255 mission.^[3]
