Clayton Poole was the first husband of NASA astronaut Danielle Poole.
History[]
Clayton was a Vietnam War veteran who returned to the United States with bitter feelings toward the U.S. society and government. He threw his Vietnam ribbons in the face of the sentry who was staffing the gate of the Air Force base, and threw away all but one of his medals.[1] He had a small celebration at The Outpost with Danielle and Gordo Stevens, the latter of whom mocked him into losing his temper, upsetting Dani as well.
Clayton suffered with PTSD for 9-10 years and then died by suicide.
After his death, Danielle visited Clayton's sister Rae and gave her some mementos from a shoebox. Rae gave Danielle the one medal that Clayton had not thrown away. Rae told Danielle that Clayton had told her about Danielle intentionally breaking her arm at Jamestown to protect Gordo's career. Rae resented Danielle's patriotism, and that Danielle's patriotism led to Clayton joining the Army and being mistreated due to racism and the under-resourced Veterans Administration.[2]
