A satellite or artificial satellite is an object intentionally placed into an orbit around a body in outer space. Satellites are used for a variety of things, like as communication relays, for navigation, broadcasting, or scientific research, as well as to observe the orbiting body. Satellites are also used for astronomical research and observation, like in the case of space telescopes. Most satellites are uncrewed space probes, but there can be crewed satellites as well which are then called space stations. While the vast majority of artificial satellites orbit Earth, there are also satellites orbiting the Moon, Mars, or other planets, and the Sun.
