Alexei Poletov, in season 3, episode 4, "Happy Valley" to Kelly Baldwin after learning his crew will push their engines beyond safe limits.

Alexei Poletov was a Soviet cosmonaut and part of Roscosmos' Mars-94 mission in the mid 90s. Alexei was named after the famous cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first man on the Moon, by his father, who was fascinated with the Soviet Space Program. His sister was named after the first woman on the Moon, Anastasia Belikova.

History

During the flight to Mars, Alexei was listening to Kelly Baldwin's outer space pirate radio. One day, he contacted her, telling her that he's afraid about his crew doing "something very dangerous".

After the failure of Mars-94 due to the "very dangerous" thing, being other members of the crew increasing power on the ship's nuclear engines until they caused a nuclear meltdown, he and the crew were rescued by NASA's Sojourner. He then became part of the US/USSR joint mission.

He became close with Kelly Baldwin who spoke the best Russian out of the American crew and helped with instructing him on the ship's NERVA engines. This began a romance between the two, with their escapades being an open secret on the Happy Valley base.

Alexei had landed on Mars with the rest of the joint crew, as supposedly one of the first people on Mars.

Alexei initially survived the Gagarin Ridge drilling disaster. Although he was disorientated, he was able to find the dead body of Nick Corrado, who's helmet had been fractured, exposing him to the Martian atmosphere. He met Louisa Mueller and they were able to get back to the Helios Hab. Alexei and Kelly then embarked on a rescue mission to find the buried second Hab that contained Ed Baldwin and Danny Stevens. They were able to find the faint radio beacon, but upon his return to the Hab, Alexei collapsed, as he suffered a subdural hematoma during the intial disaster. Kelly donated her blood to try and save his life, but it was unsuccessful. At the time of his death, Kelly was pregnant with his child. She later delivered their son aboard Phoenix in Martian orbit, after utilising his space suit to get to the ship. Kelly named him Alex Poletov, like his father.
