The 2003 Happy Valley riot was a riot between an alliance of Helios workers and North Korean ujunauts at Happy Valley, against the M-7 security team. Aggravating factors were allegations of torture against Helios employees and the attempted invasion of the North Korean module by the security team. As well as prolonged anger against heavy security measures against the workers in the aftermath of the preceding strike and the theft of Goldilocks.

History[]

Lead up[]

The foundations for the riot can be found in the 2003 Helios strike. While the workers had been successful in a number of their goals, such as increased pay and safety concerns, their main goal of mining the asteroid Goldilocks in Martian orbit was unsuccessful.[1] Repercussions from the strike began to be felt around the base, as workers were heavily restricted in where they could go, and a security team began to patrol the base. A small number of workers led by Helios CEO Dev Ayesa also plotted to steal the asteroid.[2] The plot was discovered shortly before the asteroid capture spacecraft Ranger was to initiate a burn that would take it to Earth for exploitation. While the plot was discovered, the plotters weren't, leading to Roscosmos director Irina Morozova and NASA administrator Eli Hobson authorizing the use of KGB and CIA sleeper agents on the base.[3]

Torture and security crack down[]

The agents, Timur Avilov and Mike Bishop, trapped plotter Miles Dale and began to interrogate him about the plot.[4] After he feigned ignorance, they resorted to torture. Eventually, they would discover the location of the plot by threatening his family. After this discovery, they were able to capture Gerardo Ortiz-Niño, but the rest of the plotters escaped to the North Korean module of the base, under the command of ujunaut Lee Jung-Gil and Ed Baldwin. Gerardo is taken to the interrogation room, where he is beaten himself. Bishop leaves the prisoners with Avilov.

During Miles' torture, base commander Danielle Poole authorizes the security team to round up any non-essential personnel and confine them to quarters. This leads to Frank Tuttle being taken into custody due to his refusal. Ilya Breshov and others see his arrest and are angered at it. The security team also search worker's lockers, where Nate Lowry discovers a pistol hidden in Tuttle's locker. He hides the pistol in his own pocket.[3]

Breach of North Korean module[]

Despite the plotter's success in rerouting Goldilocks into Martian orbit, Bishop leads the rest of the security team to breach the North Korean module, which is technically North Korean soil. Danielle orders them to stop, but he claims he has been ordered by the Department of Defence, which supersedes her command. Lee orders his compatriots to block the door, as the security team tries to breach it.[3]

Rescue and uprising[]

As the security team tries to invade North Korea, Petros Khorenatsi, Ilya, and other workers break into the interrogation room. Petros and the others savagely beat the KGB agent Avilov, as Ilya frees the two prisoners. Miles then informs the rest of the workers who have been trapped in their quarters about what has happened. He leads the workers to the North Korean sector and armed with pipes and other makeshift weapons attack the security team. Bishop is quickly beaten over the head with a pipe by Miles, and the two sides clash in a bloody battle.[3]

Shooting[]

Danielle and Ed see the riot from their video feeds and individually try to stop it. They are unsuccessful at first. Lowry, who has been hit over the head staggers away, pulling out the pistol. This is spotted by the workers and during the tussle over the gun, it goes off. Danielle is hit, and the sound of the gunshot stops the riot. She is immediately taken away to the medical bay, where she is saved by Dr. Dimitri Mayakovsky.[3]

Aftermath[]

The allegations of torture are leaked to the media, leading to a crisis for NASA and Eli.[3]
